About
John Fifer, MD received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Florida, where he was the number one graduating senior and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida, in 1976. Dr. Fifer performed his internship at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.
Following his medical training, Dr. Fifer joined the United States Public Health Service as a general medical practitioner in rural North Carolina. After his public health service, he attended his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Medical College of Virginia, where he did extensive research and procedures on hip and knee replacement and arthroscopic surgery.
Dr. Fifer continues to have a keen interest in knee and hip replacement surgery, as well as the complex reconstruction of damaged joints. He specializes in the restoration of function to damaged and injured joints. He is currently working on minimally invasive hip and knee replacement.
Moving to Fort Myers in 1987, he joined with Dr. Heligman to form the Institute for Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine.
Board-certified by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Fifer is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Florida Vocational Rehabilitation Panel of Specialists, the Florida Medical Society, the Florida Orthopaedic Society, and the American Medical Association. He also has served as co-chairman of many orthopaedic instructional meetings.
Dr. Fifer works with orthopaedic joint replacement companies as a consultant in the development of new procedures and instruments.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Dr. Fifer is married and the father of two sons and one daughter. In his free time, he and his family enjoy boating, surfing, golf, and the outdoors.
